How Can we Help?
The First Step is an initiative to assist survivors of sexual assault by conducting a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Exam (SANE Exam). We aim to support, treat and empower survivors.
What is a SANE Exam?
SANE exams are completed within 5 days, or 120 hours, of abuse taking place. During a SANE exam the survivor will receive a complete medical exam which includes, but is not limited to, assessing for injuries, providing prophylactic STI, HIV and pregnancy medication, and collecting evidence for law enforcement. At our private SANE facility, located within the NMCAC, the victim is the only patient with a SANE and a trauma informed advocate.
What is a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE)?
SANE stands for Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner. SANE’s working with our program are experienced, specially trained and trauma informed. All exams are provided by these nurses at one of the NMCAC locations in Roscommon or Tawas City, MI.
